Hey Carlos! I am just thinking about a new term i heard today, Design Research. Have you heard about it?
That's simple!, Design research is the intricate process of identifying various facets of the design process and blah blah blah........................................................................................................................
Ahh, that made no sense! Could you make it easier for me to understand?
Car A
Ok then, Lets take a look at two car manufacturers, Car A and Car B
Car B
Manufacturer A spends meticulous time talking to its customers to know their needs better
Manufacturer B doesn't spend a lot of time researching and heads into the production phase
Car A has much higher sales than Car B, so Car B decides to go back to the Drawing Board
They find out that Manufacturer A did a lot more User Research, so they also decide to do a lot more user research
Manufacturer B goes above and beyond than A in their user research in an attempt to cover all bases
Even with the new and updated car, Manufacturer couldn't replicate the success of Car A
So, even though Manufacturer B did a lot of user research just like Manufacturer A, they still couldn't replicate the success A achieved. So what do you think Is the problem here?
Could it be that they didn't consider the other factors that could have brought the success to Manufacturer A?
Exactly! The success of the product and the process depends on various other factors or facets like the people, the tools, the economy etc.
Design research explores all such facets of the design process and tries to make it more efficient and effective so that Designers can use the process to develop successful products
Thanks Lewis for making it simple! Now i am intrigued about the design processes and want to learn more about it!!
