  • Delegates of SC wanted the state legislatures to take military action and to secede from the Union if the federal government demanded the customs taxes. This idea of states having the power of nullification almost developed into a civil war.
  • Delegate: Take military action and secede from the Union if the federal government demands the customs duties, state legislators!
  • Andrew Jackson: Fine.
  • The Force Bill gave Jackson the power to use force to enforce the tariffs, and by making strong appeals to the American people.
  • Soldiers: Cahloun will be hung if y'all nullify the tariff!
  • Cahloun: Oh no!
  • When South Carolina undertook to nullify the tariff, Jackson ordered armed forces to Charleston and threatened to hang Calhoun.
  • Henry Clay negotiated a compromise to lower tariffs which led to South Carolina dropping the idea of nullification.
