- Nora Seed is playing chess at the library with Mrs. Elm, the librarian when she gets the news that her father has passed away
- I'm sorry Nora, but your father has passed away
- Nora tries a life with her ex Dan, then she tries a life when she stayed in a band and became a famous rockstar and finally she recalls how Ash asked her on a date and she tries a life where she accepted it. After this, she realizes that all of these things came to an end because the end result would have hurt her more. Then Mrs. Elm tells her how to return back to normal life by finding the book that represented her original life.
- *19 years later* Nora's neighbor, Ash, told her that her cat Voltaire died and then this caused her to be late to work, causing her to get fired.
- I'm sorry but I have to fire you Nora
- But I need this job, please don't fire me
- After experiencing all of these negative times in her life, Nora decided to overdose on pills
- Nora wakes up and finds herself in the Midnight Library where each book represents portals for each variation of her life. Mrs. Elm is Nora's guide and she explains that she can in these alternate realities as long as she desires but if she loses her will to live, she will die forever.

- Nora then wakes up in the hospital. As the book continues, Nora works on herself and patches things up with her brother but she still lives with regret for the rest of her life
