In approximately 2000 BCE, Gilgamesh ruled over Uruk, a city with a desert terrain in southern Mesopotamia. However, when ruling, the Mesopotamian gods created a hairy friend -- Enkidu -- to keep him accompanied and occupied.

After killing a divine bull, which was committing a sin, Gilgamesh and Enkidu were punished, with Enkidu passing away. However, Gilgamesh waited next to him for a week, not ready to accept that he was dead. After, however, Gilgamesh became much more lonely, started fearing the chance of himself passing away.

With the fear of passing away, Ruler Gilgamesh goes on a journey over the seas and rivers with the help of Urshanabi (Sursunabu). This adventure helped Gilgamesh meet Utnapishtim, a survivor of the great flood. Gilgamesh asks Utnapishtim for the secret to immortality, but after Utnapishtim explains he does not have the secret, Gilgamesh returns back to Uruk.
