Dharavi is a slum located in Mumbai, West India. It is home to more than one million people! Here in Dharavi, life is hard but we make the most of it. Normally, we all play together in the street, make cricket bats out of wood. So many people live here that you see someone new everyday. But we always make friends.
This is your typical Dharavi house. Usually, we eat sleep and cook in the same place. Our Mother gets to sleep in our only bed. Also, water is rashioned here so we fill up in the morning, we have to have to get enough to last us to the next morning.
Here in Dharavi, infections and diseases spread very quickly. It doesn't help that we are crammed together. Luckily, there are a lot of doctors but we don't tend to have any vaccination. Doctors normally treat around 4000 cases of illness a day. That's a lot!
This is the high street. Sometimes it turns into a mosque. Many people own shops here, but they still don't earn much money. Often these streets are covered in a sort of toxic compound but we are all used to it. There is no rubbish collection here in Dharavi and the sewers are open so it smells terrible, but the people here learn to live with it.
