Open Educational Resources, or OER, are resources that are either free or have little cost that can be utilized in classrooms or research. We've learned that in a classroom with a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approach, OER's are incorporated to create an open learning environment, heavily focused on inclusivity.
The way that these two concepts align together are by eliminating barriers between the teacher and students, increasing access to educational resources for students, equity and inclusivity for student focused activities, and offers an ethical lens for both students and lesson planners. This approach offers a wider mode of education for students to practice and by giving them different options to highlight their knowledge, it creates equity in the classroom.

In my freshman year of college, all my professors made the efforts to offer any chapters to students who couldn't have the course material to them on time. They would have PDF's available on the course modules when possible and when it was asked for by most students. It offered a stress free environment throughout the semester.
In recent years, professors have been more cautious of having resources that are easily accessible to students because of the possibility where there could be a student who can't afford or access the materials. It's an issue that has been prominent in most of my education that I want to help fix in my future.
As a future teacher, I would like to give students the best options when it comes to their learning. Implementing methods from Universal Design for Learning will aid in my efforts by giving the students creative freedom and autonomy within the classroom. The opportunity for them to be fully engaged in their learning process will grow exponentially and as a teacher that will be the greatest achievement.
The setting in the classroom changes when there are choices within a certain assignment. The flexibility and opportunity given to the students creates a safer and more engaging environment. Offering the students a choice in which media they'd like to pursue in an assignment encourages them to complete it since they were given a choice. This develops a student center approach which is a part of the principle of UDL I would like to practice in my classroom.

The main focus that UDL offers to teachers is representation, expression, and engagement. These are the aspects I want to embody in my classroom so students can feel that they have an active role in their education and have equal opportunities to succeed.
