When Gina's parents were informed Gina was diagnosed with Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome and that she would have many limitations in life, they were confused and scared. Professionals felt Gina would be a burden to her parents and society and sugested them to find an institution to place Gina.
Regardless of Gina's diagnosis, her parents decided to look past her limitations and fight to give her the best life they could. They did an early intervention and physical, communication, and eating therapy to help Gina have a normal and happy life. Gina was able to play and experience things every other kid could because of her parents.
Despite Gina's limitations, she was happy and living life to the fullest because of the intervention of her parents. Parents are the biggest defenders of their kids, which is why we should hear parents' opinions about things involving their kids. As a teacher, I will help parents share their voices by listening to their concerns regarding their kids. Communicating with them frequently about student progress, inviting them to school activities, and building a relationship with them to ensure the student is succeeding in school and at home.
