Covid-19 replicates within our cells. To start, it must first enter our body, usually doing so through respiratory pathways (airways such as nose and mouth).
Once inside our body, the corona virus invades and enters our cells, typically the ones in our lungs and throat.
NOOOO!
COUGH
Once inside the cell, the virus takes control of the ribosome and starts producing copies of itself, creating more corona viruses.Ribosome = the copying and production center of the cell.
Not every copy is perfect however. Errors during replication cause some versions of the virus to be different, altering features of the virus. We call these special viruses "mutations" or "variants."
It's... it's... A MUTATION!!!
These variants, such as the current Omicron or Delta mutations, have the possibility of being more transmissible, deadly, or even both!
Luckily, following public health guidelines such as distancing, wearing a mask, and getting vaccinated help protect us from these variants, and also reduce the opportunities for viruses to mutate during replication. So stay safe everyone, we're almost at the end!
