- Enoch unmasked a egwugwu which is a horrific sin in the Ibo culture so they burn Enoch's compound to the ground and then go to destroy the church to cleanse the village of his sin. Mr. Smith stands his ground and refuses to let this happen, so the interpreter rewords the statement in hopes of disarming the situation. This Fails and the church is burned anyway.
- This meeting is over! Go back to your homes now!
- The leaders of Umofia are invited to the District Commissioner's headquarters to discuss the destruction of the church as "friends". But then they were betrayed and imprisoned where they were insulted, starved, and beaten during the humiliating experience.
- Fight with me people of Umofia!
- Upon their return, they hold a meeting to decide the course of action the following morning. The first speaker laments the damage that the white man and his church have done to the clan and bewails the desecration of the gods and ancestral spirits. He reminds the clan that it may have to spill clansmen’s blood if it enters into battle with the white men.
- The land is cursed!
- They are interrupted by five men sent by the District Commissioner and are told to break up the meeting or face consequences.
- Okonkwo kills the kotma (their leader) immediately in hopes of rallying the tribe to go to war against the white men. The crowd is in awe, they allow the other white men to escape and Okonkwo is asked his reasoning for his actions. He knows he has failed and his village will not go to war.
- Okonkwo has failed his clan and cannot cope with the new way of life so he hangs himself. The District Commissioner comes looking for Okonkwo and Obeirka leads him to his hanging body and blames the commissioner for his friend's death and scorching his greatness. He ends up asking for his help with the body, for the clan cannot touch (or bury) it because it is a curse of the land. The District Commissioner surprised, agrees to help . He decides to write a piece on this event and about the Ibo culture in his book
