I've had a brilliant idea. what if we use the American colonies to pay off our debt?
I would love to renovate the castle, but... WE HAVE NO MONEY!!!
Oh no, sir! What if we use the American colonies to pay off our debt?
That's what I just said...
A Cause of the American Revolution- The Sugar Act of 1764
This new tax is making my imported sugar so expensive. I don't think I'll be able to get this sugar. I guess I'll have to get the British made sugar.
Here's your sugar, fresh from the Caribbean. That will be $5 plus $45 for the imported sugar tax.
Actually, I'll have the British- made sugar instead.
A Cause of the American Revolution-The Stamp Tax of 1765
Sadly, yes. I don't understand why we have to pay these taxes when we have no representatives in Parliament.
I need stamps for all of these documents!?
It's outrageous and unfair to us! We shouldn't even buy their British goods. Maybe that will teach them to treat us right.
The British government sent troops, supplies, resources, and money to protect the American colonists during the French and Indian War from 1754-1763. However, Britain was in severe debt- their debt had doubled- from the French and Indian War; therefore, they decided to use the American colonies to gain money since Britain's debt had increased due to aiding the colonists during the war.
A Cause of the American Revolution-The Boston Massacre of 1770
AHHHHH!Help us! The British soldiers are attacking us!
FIRE!
The Sugar Act of 1764 was the first law passed by Parliament to raise tax revenue in the colonies. The Sugar Act increased the duty on foreign imported sugar. This tax was used to pay for the French and Indian War debt and maintenance of defense on the colonies' frontier. The tax angered the colonists, so the colonists protested against the act until the duties were eventually lowered.
A Cause of the American Revolution-The Intolerable Acts of 1774
What do you mean I can't have my ship here! Who's going to stop me! You?! Certainly not the king!
The Stamp Tax of 1765 was a direct tax used to raise revenues to support a new military force in the American colonies. It mandated the use of stamped paper and affixing stamps to certify the payment of stamps. This angered the colonists because they believed this violated their liberties. There were protests against the Stamp Act, and the Stamp Act Congress was created. The Stamp Act was later nullified.
The American Revolution
WE SURRENDER!!!
The Boston Massacre of 1770 ocurred when a group of British soldiers opened fire on a group of civilian colonists. The soldiers killed or wounded some colonists; despite this, only two of the British soldiers were found guilty. They faced little punishment for their actions which further angered the colonists. The colonists saw the British soldiers as a threat to their safety and lives.
The Intolerable Acts of 1774 were implemented by Parliament as punishment in response to the Boston Tea Party. One of the acts was the Boston Port Act. Due to this act, Boston harbor was closed until the damages were paid for and order was restored. The acts limited and restricted the activities of the colonists which again angered them because Britain was further tightening its grip on the colonies.
This harbor is temporarily closed. You will have to dock your vessel at another harbor.
The last major battle of the American Revolution was the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. There, British General Charles Cornwallis surrendered his British forces to the American General George Washington's Continental Army. The American Revolution ended in 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. America officially gained its independence and was recognized as The United States of America.
