There are 6 main reasons as to why Texas was annexed into the United States. One of these was Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny was the belief that the United States was destined to spread its territory and culture across the continent. In order to keep moving west, the U.S. had to annex Texas.
Anglo settlers in Texas had immigrated from the U.S. during the Mexican and Republic era. However, many of them got homesick and wanted to rejoin the United States after living in Texas for several years.
Texas was also in heavy debt because of the Texas Revolution and unwise spending by President Lamar. If Texas joined the United States, the federal government would forgive their debt.
Texas also had trouble dealing with Mexican invasions and native raids. If Texas were part of the U.S., the army would protect Texans from these threats.
Finally, the United States wanted political recognition by other countries, especially European ones. If the European powers knew about the annexation, they would stay out of Texas and give America better recognition.
Did you hear the news? The United States of America annexed Texas.
Why I did! I think we should stop meddling in Texas and give America the recognition it deserves.
