Jocasta is confused as to why he asks so many questions. Oedipus learns that there is a witness to the murder of Laius.

Our King is not himself... I turn in prayer... Our hearts are heavy with fear when we see our leader distracted.
Jocasta tells him where the shepherd is. Oedipus wants to know where he can find this witness, so he can get the real story.

Polybus is dead.
To make sure that the prophecies of Delphi weren't true, he wants to see the shepherd to ask him if three highway men actually killed Laius or if it was actually himself. Jocasta also heard of prophecies of her son that she does not want to know about. She begs Oedipus to give up the chase for information.

Jocasta is concerned and worried about Oedipus and his queries.
The messenger comes to inform Jocasta of Oedipus' alleged father's death.
The messenger tells Oedipus that his father is dead. He is shocked by this news because he did believe the prophecy. Also, he is sad of his father's passing. Jocasta is relieved at this news which confirms she is not married to her son.
The King is dead.
