On October 2, 1835, the growing tensions between Mexico and Texas erupt into violence when Mexican soldiers attempt to disarm the people of Gonzales, sparking the Texan war for independence. After a brief fight, the Mexicans retreated and the Texans kept their cannon.

Texans meet at Washington-on-the Brazos and decide if Texas would declare its independence. The peace party vs. the war party. It was put to a vote and the peace party won. The colonist pledged their loyalty to Mexico and said they would defend the Constitution of 1824.

In the Turtle Bayou Resolutions, the rebels first articulated ideas that would become central to the Texas revolutionary movement, including allegiance to the Mexican constitution of 1824.
While many colonists are at the convention Santa Anna has arrived in Texas and is fighting against the Texans, The convention takes place at Washington-on-the Brazos and the purpose is to establish in an independent government. In the declaration, the Texans write a list of com[plaints about why they were unhappy with the Mexican Government. On March 6, 1836, the Alamo falls and this motivates the Texans to keep fighting.
