One day, as Suzanne David was taking a break from school in Cherbourg, France, a German plane dropped a bomb in the middle of a the town square. She got lots of shrapnel in her, her friend was mentally wounded, and her neighbor was blown apart in front of her.
Some time later, Nazis take over her town. They steal many houses from the families that live there, including hers. Her Dad ends up finding an old run down "house" near a graveyard. Her Dad is still able to work, but he has to work for the Nazis.
Suzanne has always loved singing, and has been going to school for it for a long time. She starts to find success in singing and takes part in many musicals.
She begins to carry messages for the French resistance, given to her by the town doctor and received by different contacts known by a number. Her's is 22. She takes great pains to deliver the messages discreetly, and it starts affecting her confidence and makes her paranoid and jumpy.

She notices that she hasn't seen some of the contacts in a long time. She starts to have nightmares every night and is constantly paranoid. One day she goes to the barbershop with her music instructor. As she starts getting her hair cut, some Nazis come and arrest her. She found out the haircutter was in love with a Nazi, so she told him she was here.

Suzanne spent the night needing to use the restroom and being interrogated by Nazi officers. But in the morning, they were rushing around trying to leave in a hurry, forgetting all about her. Soon, there was nobody there. She just walked out and went home. When she got there, she found out that the Germans evacuated because of D-Day. She told her family she was a spy. They were very proud of her.
