- Hi Sally, how was your day at school?
- It was alright, a lot of people were signing up for the sport they want to play.
- How exciting! Did you sign up for football like you've been wanting to?
- No, some boys in my class told me I couldn't because football is a boy sport and that I should stick to cheerleading.
- What? How is football a boys only sport?
- That's not right, come sit down and we can talk about it.
- Because girls can't run as fast as boys and we aren't as strong. Also our long hair would get in the way and the uniforms aren't made to fit our bodies.
- Sally, you're so talented at football and really enjoy playing that sport! You shouldn't give up on something because someone else told you it's not for you.
- You're not limited to girly activities because you're a girl, you have an equal opportunity for anything you want to do! The only thing that matters is what makes you happy, and being confident in your body.
- But what if the girls also make fun of me for playing football because it's "manly"?
- I went through this when I wanted to become a doctor. Boys in school would tell me that I should be a nurse so I could take time off to raise you. Just because I'm a girl doesn't make me any less capable of having a respected job while also raising a family.
- Thank you, Sally! I'm encouraging you to do the same with football because you have great skills! Use your femininity to your advantage now so you can build your confidence for the future!
- I'm glad you didn't listen to them because you are so great at your job and you're a great mom!
- Of course! You shouldn't feel pressured to conform to the media's ideas of a girl's role in life!
- Thank you for taking my feelings seriously and encouraging me to do what I want to no matter what gender I am or what my body looks like!
- I'm gonna sign up for football tomorrow!
