Okwonko resents his father, Unoka, for being "less of a man." His father's failures turns him into a hardworking man that feared weakness.
Okwonko defeats the undefeated Cat in a wrestling match and becomes well known throughout the clan. His farming became successful, he earned clan titles, and married three beautiful wives.
Okwonkwo was tasked with taking care of Ikemefuna. He became a father to him in the years that Ikemeguna lived with him but after three years the Oracle says that he must be killed. Okwonko was the one that killed him and from that point things started falling apart.
Okwonko accidently kills Ezeudu's son at his farewwll dance and is forced to flee to his motherland for 7 years.
White men began to appear and they wiped out Abame. They then began to go to different villages, including Mbane, to build churches in an attempt to spread Christianity. Christianity began disrupting the clan and Okonkwo's son even switched sides.
Okonkwo hangs himself after he can no longer endure the Christians and what they had done to the clan. After killing a white messenger and going to prison, Okonkwo has had enough. He would rather commit suicide than fail like his father.
