Hamlet's father, King Hamlet, has just passed away two months ago. Hamlet's mother. Gertrude, has already remarried to King Hamlet's brother, Claudius. In the wake of this, King Hamlet's ghost is now disturbed and seeks Hamlet.
Hamlet sees his father's ghost and it tells him that he was murdered by the current king, Hamlets uncle. It tells Hamlet he must get revenge. After this, Hamlet spirals in plotting on how to catch his uncle. He decides on a play that acts out his father's death.
Hamlet gathers people to participate in this play to catch Claudius's reaction to the action. He asks his friend to keep an eye on Claudius to see if he looks guilty.
After the play, Claudius and Gertrude are mad at Hamlet. Hamlet talks to his mother alone, or presumably alone. Polonius and Claudius plan to listen to Hamlet's conversations. Hamlet has had enough, and decides to kill who was spying on him. It was Polonius, alone.
Polonius's death causes Hamlet's love, Ophelia, to go crazy and kill herself. As Hamlet continues spiraling, Claudius realizes he needs to kill him, and devises a plan with Laertes. They plan to fence with poison swords, and have Hamlet drink poison as a backup.
Hamet and Laertes fence as planned, and Claudius has poisoned wine as a backup. Gertrude drinks the poison on accident, and dies. Hamlet then goes after Claudius and Laertes, killing both, but not before Laertes slices Hamlet. As Hamlet dies, he tells Horatio to tell his story. Denmark is now under control of Fortinbras, who stormed the castle as this went doen.
