All right folks, I've enlisted the help of Guido Fawkes, a gunpowder specialist, to help us in our plan.
I have a devilish plan in mind, one to make people suffer. Mwah ha ha!
Are you okay Robert?
On a dark and stormy night, a group of people were up to something sinister in the Duck and Drake Pub of London.
Positive! I've got 36 barrels ready to explode!
Are you sure about this Guido?
They were plotting... To kill the king! They wanted to blow up the Houses of Parliament with gunpowder, and therefore get rid of his majesty. To do this, they hired a man called Guido Fawkes who was an expert on explosives.
Hey you! You're under arrest! What's your name?
John Johnson! And I'm innocent!
After a few days, the King's Chief Advisor Robert Cecil received an anonymous letter. It told him to stay away from Parliament on the 5th of November. Despite the warning, he did not tell the King or search Parliament.
Less cocky, aren't we now? On to the rope.
Oh dear.
One of the plotters rented a cellar underneath parliament and Guido filled it with gunpowder barrels. On the morn of 5th November he would light the powder and get rid of the king.
But, on that fateful morn, Cecil ordered the search of the cellar, and the guards found Fawkes. When questioned, he told the guards his name was John Johnson. Which in those times, was the most common name possible.
After 3 day of torture and a half hour trial, Fawkes was sentenced to be Hanged, Drawn and Quartered. His fellow conspirators ran away, but were caught and shot dead. To this day, we celebrate bonfire night on 5th November, in memory of the infamous and failed gunpowder plot.
