- Rolihlahla Mandela was born into the Madiba clan in the village of Mvezo, in the Eastern Cape, on 18 July 1918. His mother was Nonqaphi Nosekeni and his father was Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela, principal counsellor to the Acting King of the Thembu people, Jongintaba Dalindyebo.
- Nelson a primary school called Qunu where children where given christian names as a result his teacher Miss Mdingane gave him the name Nelson.
- Furthermore Nelson Mandela joined the ANC in 1944 and then helped to form the ANC Youth league.
- In 1944 he married Walter Sisulu’s cousin, Evelyn Mase. Consequently they had two sons, Madiba Thembekile and Makgatho, and two daughters both called Makaziwe, the first of whom died in infancy. He and his wife divorced in 1958.
- Nelson Mandela was arrested and imprisoned in 1962, and subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment for conspiring to overthrow the state following the Rivonia Trial. He served 27 in prison on Robben Island prison.
- Mandela and de Klerk led efforts to negotiate an end to apartheid, which resulted in the 1994 multiracial general election in which Mandela led the ANC to victory and became president. Concludingly Mandela was president for 5 years.
