In this scene Fortunato is being lead deep into the creepy catacombs, but doesn't seen to realize that it's kind of weird for Montresor to lead him all the way into the catacombs and offering him a ton of wine. Me as the reader thought that Fortunato would be suspicious of Montresor at some point throughout their journey in the ominous catacombs, but he doesn't realize that being in the catacombs alone with Montresor is unusual until the very end of the story, so the opposite of what I anticipated happened.
In this scene Montresor pretends to care about Fortunato's health and toasts to his long life, but we as the reader know that he doesn't actually mean that, but that he secretly wants to kill Fortunato, and knows that his life won't actually be that long once he is killed.
In this scene Montresor says, "Rest in Peace!" Montresor doesn't actually want Fortunato to rest in peace, but isn't lying either, so it's verbal irony. I'm assuming Montresor says this in a somewhat sarcastic and or sinister way.
