- After a false start Henry's training and survival skills kicked in and he fought bravely. At the end of the battle, Henry thought that all of the war was over, however it was far from that.
- 4th Battle
- Come On!!
- During the second battle Henry became overwhelmed by all of the blood and shooting. Because of his fear, Henry ran away from the battle.
- 5th Battle
- When he was fighting in his third battle, Henry was like a war machine. He kept shooting even after everyone else had stopped.
- Theme
- During his fourth battle, Henry becomes the flag bearer for his regiment. He leads his regiment into the battle holding the flag high, knowing he is not only fighting against something, but fighting for something.
- In Henry's fifth battle, he is still the flag bearer and is leading his regiment to victory. The other army's flag bearer got shot and Henry's regiment won.
- Throughout this novel, Henry is maturing and coming of age. In the beginning of the book Henry was an immature child, but by the end he was a man.
