Darius the king of Persia wanted the control of Greece and also the revenge from their aid in the Ionian revolt, so they came with their cavalry to the shores of Marathon. Athens refused to meet them to fight and instead hid in the hills. Athens ran down the mountainside and caught Persia’s foot soldiers off-guard and surrounded them on three sides. When the Persians ran toward their boats to escape, the Athenians attacked from behind and successfully beat the Persians.

Sparta wanted to stop Persia from gaining control of Greece. Sparta forced Persia into a narrow valley between two mountains and 300 Spartans fought them off for days killing ¼ of a million Persian men. Persia was helped by a traitor and found a way around the mountain so that they could attack from both sides. Persia used arrows to kill the remaining Spartans and Persia left victorious.

Athens wanted to stop Persia from gaining control of Greece. But theAthens were outnumbered. Athens forced Persia into a narrow body of water between two land masses and fought them off using their strong navy. Persian ships couldn’t stand up against the Athenian navy, and ended up retreating. Greece was victorious.
