- Four Way Teachers Can Help Parents Share Their Voice!By: Nafisa MahmudAfter reading the textbook chapter and watching the presentation, Gina's story brought so much awareness into my life. It was a beautiful story of strength and resilience. Gina's story showed me how important the voice of the parents truly is. Gina's mom aka Professor Mirabella advocated for her daughter throughout many moments of her life. One moment that stood out to me was when Gina was enrolled into a school and her mom liked the techniques of a specific teacher. The administration claimed that Gina would not work well in a high functioning classroom like the one her mom wanted for her. However, Gina proved them wrong and flourished. Another thing I notice was the importance of adaptive furniture as well routines. It is important for teacher to know from the parents what their child needs and is comfortable with to in order to help them.
- Photos/VideosVisual content is a great way for parents to share their voice. It is important for teachers to encourage parents to share photos and video as teacher can see a student's progress at home. Photos and video can be very emotional for parents. Thus, it is important for teachers to use the information to further provide assistance to their students. Moreover, teachers can also remind parents how far their child has come and remind them of their growth.
- "Getting To Know Your Child Letter To Teacher "A "Getting to Know Your Child" letter or questionnaire form to the teacher is the second way that teachers can help parents share their voice. These forms or letters can include a myriad of questions in regards to their child. Parents know their child better than anyone and will be able to share vital information which can be extremely helpful for teachers when they are creating lessons and making modifications for their child. These questions can address the child's likes and dislikes as well as strengths and struggles. Parents can also share their child's interests and any other pieces of information they think the teacher should know.
- EmailEmail is the third way teachers can help parents share their voice. By having an open line of communication between the parents and the teacher, there will be a development of family involvement and parent teacher relationships. Effective communication will greatly benefit the students and their progress. Parents will also feel like their voice is being heard and they are a part of their child's growth and success. Parents can keep the teacher updated on any concerns they have. Parents can also ask questions concerning their child's progress.
- Monthly Meetings/PTAMonthly meetings or Parent Teacher Association meetings is another way for parents to share their voice. Teachers can facilitate these meetings and have higher ups such as principals and assistant principals at these meeting. Teacher can invite parents to discuss improvements or changes they would like to see in the school environment. Parents can advocate for their children. They can push for adaptive furniture or more services such as Speech Therapy. Parents can share their thoughts and ideas with administration to collaborate on change. Teachers can collect the data and use the information and implement it in the lesson plans or curriculum and provide differentiation. These meetings can also provide parents with space to advocate in front of the leaders in the school buildings that will help bring in more resources for the students.
