A lot of people think that Day of the Dead sounds creepy. They imagine that zombies are going to run around in the neighborhood looking for brains to eat. That's not what it's about at all! It's actually a time to celebrate our dearly departed loved ones.

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration of life and death. The dead are still seen as members of the community who are kept alive in memory and spirit. During Día de los Muertos, they temporarily return to earth and spend time with their loved ones.
The family creates an altar. They aren't worshiping their ancestors. They are preparing a place to display pictures of them, and present them with a feast of their favorite foods. And marigolds.
Calavera means skull. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, calavera was used to describe short, humorous poems which were often sarcastic tombstone epitaphs that poked fun at the living.
