- Duke and Andy traveled on foot since they were too poor to afford a horse.most immigrants began their journey to America on foot, horseback, or train
- Upon reaching Ellis Island, passengers were processed through the station, and the vast majority was allowed to legally enter the United States in three to five hours. Still, about 20 percent of immigrants had cases that required more time. These immigrants were forced to stay overnight in terrible dormitories.
- This is where the steerage is located; where the 3rd class passengers stayed. it was dirty, crowded and cramped.
- Duke and Andy were third class passengers so this is where they stayed.

- finally, it was so cramped and crowded that it was starting to stink.
- Duke and Andy are waiting on the small ferry boat to take them to Ellis Island.
- as Duke and Andy waited their turn to be processed by immigrant officials, they witnessed a little girl from turkey; Aylin Banu being pulled away from her parents because the guards didn't believe that she was their child. which was also what immigrants had to go through during this time.
