- At the age of fourteen, the page became a squire. He would dress the knight for battles and tournaments and had to assist the knight on the battlefield.
- The squire had to become used to wearing the armour so it would become second nature to him when he wore it as a knight.
- A squire had to become skilled in using the lance, spear and sword. He had to practice so that the weapon would not run through his fingers.
- When the knight is considered ready, usually between the ages of 18 and 20, the squire was dubbed a knight by his own knight. He was tapped on each shoulder, reminding him of the vows he promised to uphold.
- On the eve of the dubbing, a knight confessed all his sins to a priest. He was given a symbolic bath and fasted. In all white, he prayed for his armour and his weapons all night.
- If a knight broke his vows, he was stripped of his knighthood and in another ceremony, he was buried, because a knight without honour is no longer alive.
