- AT FRANCE! TWO OLD FRIENDS REUNITED AFTER A LONG TIME AND HAD A BRIEF CHAT ABOUT HISTORY OF THEIR COUNTRIES (INDIA-SAMEER AND FRANCE-JACOB).
- Hi Jacob! I am great. My classes are going well. YESS my history classes are pretty interesting these days as we study about The great Bengal Famine.
- WOW! well my history classes are also pretty interesting these days. I am studying about The subsitance crisis which occured during the rule of King Louis XVI in the 18th century.

- You know the main causes of the crisis were-1) The population of France rose from about 23 million in 1715 to 28 million in 1789. This led to a rapid increase in the demand for food grains. Production of grains could not keep pace with the demand. So the price of bread which was the staple diet of the majority rose rapidly. 2) Most workers were employed as labourers in workshops whose owner fixed their wages. But wages did not keep pace with the rise in prices.3) Things became worse whenever drought or hail reduced the harvest.
- OH !This was bad Jacob.
- Jacob, you know what the causes of the Great Bengal Famine are pretty different-For many years, the British blamed the famine on weather conditions and food shortfalls, as if it were an unavoidable natural disaster. Today, most researchers agree that the crisis was human-made, triggered primarily by war-time inflation that pushed the price of food out of reach.
- Indeed Sameer the causes are kind a different!
- But I think the consequences are pretty same as after The Subsisitance Crisis the shortage of food caused starvation as the poor were unable to access.
- Yess! because of Bengal famine prices rose and it was difficult to access food and it also caused starvation and malnutrition.
