Isla honey, Could you please set the table for me?
In The Social Dilemma, one major problem that was emphasized was the link between social media and mental health. Tristan Harris explains that social media causes mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.
Here we follow Isla's story, a middle school girl who uses social media.
Isla is addicted to her phone, she spends many hours on it each day, she often is too emersed to pay attention to her surroundings. In this scene, we see Isla scrolling through her phone ignoring her mother's calls to set the table.
During dinner Isla's mother wants to have a device-free dinner, so she takes a lockable jar, that will only open after one hour, and she put everyone's phone in it. While everyone is eating Isla attempts to get her phone back but she found it was locked. So she got a hammer and broke the jar.
Isla often uses filters on her face when posting a photo because that's how she meets unrealistic beauty standards. When she posts these photos she gets social approval, making her think that if she were to post an unedited photo she would not be as liked.
The unrealistic beauty standards cause Isla to struggle with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem. But in some cases, this can also lead to body dysmorphia, eating disorders, and suicide.
