Even though there is no literal setting, Frost uses metaphors to create a new setting in which the story is told. For example, he is using the four seasons as a metaphor most likely for a loved one who has passed, and how this is just nature and it's course. The poet uses 'she' referring to Eden park as a symbolic meaning, instead of referring to it as 'it', this may be linking back to the lost loved one theory.
SYMBOL
Like said before, there is a metaphoric meaning behind this poem, unlike some other poems, where it is a lot more literal, but this poem, along with many others, has a much deeper meaning than what is portrayed, and Frost has done a great job of keeping his poem short, but full of deep meaning and fantastic rhyming.
IMAGERY
The speaker does a great job at showing the meaning behind the poem, they show that there is a deeper meaning than the words on the page. The speaker makes the poem very engrossing, and leaves us with many questions about what the poem is actually about.
REFRAIN
In this poem the speaker says on the sixth line, 'So Eden sank to grief', this likely symbolizes the grief of losing a loved one. The speaker also describes what changes happen to nature during the seasons, and how it only lasts a certain amount of time until the cycle repeats because, as said on the last line of the poem: 'nothing gold can stay'.
Some important imagery throughout this poem that we come across can be something along the lines of 'so dawn sank to day' or 'then leaf subsides to leaf'. Besides the literal meaning, what could this mean? the first sentence is in the second to last line of the poem, which may mean that it is a less word-for-word way of marking the end of the cycle, and the start of a new one.
Because this poem is only short, there is not much refrain, but the speaker does always make connections back to the final sentence throughout the poem, such as 'but only so for an hour'. This makes the poem more captivating and ends on a final sentence clearly linking back to the rest of the poem.
