Exposition: Billy has 6 people in his close family. Him, his father, his mother, and his three sisters. The youngest, the middle child, and the oldest. Another member of their family is Billy's grandfather.
Conflict 1: Billy really wants dogs. Not one, but two red-bone coonhounds. He's sad because his family doesn't have the money to get the specific dogs he wants, but he works and gets two. Little Ann and Old Dan.
Rising Action: Old Dan and Little Ann tree and fight a mountain lion. They both get hurt, but Old Dan gets the worst of it.
Climax: Old Dan dies later that night after getting fixed up. He lost a lot of blood and was sick, so it almost couldn't be helped since they didn't have a doctor there, and it was just Billy's parents doctoring Little Ann and Old Dan
Falling Action: Little Ann loses her will to live, and dies because she wouldn't eat since she was grieving for Old Dan. Billy buried her next to Old Dan.
Resolution: Billy and his family finally had enough money to move to the city and to educate their children. They packed everything up. When Billy went to Old Dan and Little Ann's grave to survive, he noticed that a red fern had grown. Red ferns were said to have been planted by angels, and they never died, even during the winter.
