- The characters and operation is introduced, Charlie Gordon is convinced by Ms. Kinian, to participate in an operation that scientists believe will increase your intelligence at rapid rates. Other doctors involved in the operation are introduced.
- climax
- The operation goes successfully, and doctors run certain tests to test how smart Charlie is getting. Charlie makes friends with a rat called algernon who has undergone the same experiment as him, and is highly intelligent.
- falling action
- Charlie continues to have increases in intelligence and becomes friends with a mouse who has also undergone the same operation. Multiple tests are run on Charlie to test his intelligence. He is fired from his job
- resolution
- Algernon is no longer intelligent at all and Charlie realizes that his intelligence will also start decreasing and that he will go back to his normal self again.
- Algernon dies and Charlie's intelligence begins to regress as well. He starts to forget everything that he has learned and avoids other people, staying in his house.
- Charlie has fully regressed and leaves New York.
