Thursday Night Back @ Emilee the Student Teacher's House
Wow! Ms.D's lesson today really incorporated a lot of the 16 principles of structured process approach created by Hilex that we've discussed in writing methods.
-Composing is highly social act.-Teachers orchestrate student activity.-Modeling of thinking practices may be appropriate.
While modeling is essential to student success, how do you know how much to do? How much is too much modeling, and how much is not enough?
The only problem is that the writing process she used is created around White Standard English. While this is important for standards, how could I adjust it in a classroom to be more inclusive?
I think the best idea would be to do some modeling and provide some supports, and then check student understanding with a formative assignment. Based on that formative assignment I can determine if I need to go back and do more modeling or if they have grasped it and are ready for a summative.
I'm still not positive exactly how to approach this question, but maybe if I put less emphasis on student grammar and structure, instead focusing on their ability to address the prompt using their own voice, it could be beneficial.
