  • Meeting of the Estates General
  • I think everyone should pay taxes!
  • We think the third estate should pay all the taxes. Overruled.
  • Tennis Court Oath
  • Let us now take the Tennis Court Oath!
  • We pledge that we will not stop meeting until we have a constitution that gives equal rights to everyone!
  • Storming of the Bastille
  • We need gun powder, and we're not afraid to take it.
  • What do we do?
  • I don't know.
  • As the financial crisis worsened in France, King Louis XVI called the Estates-General. The meeting consisted of the first, second, and third estates. Unfortunately, the third estate was almost always overruled because they voted by order, with each estate receiving only one vote.
  • The March on Versailles
  • How am I supposed to feed my children when I don't have any BREAD!?
  • That's it! I demand you come back to paris with us!
  • After getting sick of their lack of representation, several members of the third estate met separately and declared themselves the National Assembly. They pledged that they would not stop meeting until a just constitution was established. However, it would be another two years before the Constitution of 1791 was made. They didn't stop though, and even when they were locked out of their meeting room, they found an indoor tennis court instead.
  • The Reign of Terror
  • On July 14, 1789, the people of France stormed the Bastille prison. They had weapons to defend themselves from the invading armies, but not the gun powder, causing the storming of the Bastille. The act of storming the Bastille was one of the key events that sparked the revolution.
  • The Rise of Napoleon
  • My army is going to conquer all of Europe!
  • I'm part of one of the greatest armies in the world!
  • On October 5, 1789, a crowd of women marched from Paris to Versailles to demand bread, as nobles and the royal family were eating well when the rest of France was suffering. When they weren't given what they wanted, they made King Louis XVI promise to leave Versailles and go back to Paris with them.
  • Well...
  • Once the monarchy was abolished in France, it became a republic. Several leaders of the new government believed that in order to move forward, all reminders of the past had to be removed. Maximillian Robespierre specifically was a large believer in removing anything and anyone that didn't share the beliefs of the revolution. If anyone was found guilty of being against the revolution, they would be sent to the guillotine to be beheaded.
  • I'm sorry for stepping on your foot...
  • The so-called queen of France is a disgrace! Let her be executed!
  • Eventually, Robespierre himself was arrested and executed, and France moved into another form of government. A military leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, came to power and crowned himself emperor. Due to his military success, the people of France were actually very fond of him. Along with helping France win battles, Napoleon brought reforms to France which included restoring economic prosperity and creating the Napoleonic Code.
