- Charlie Gordan is 37 year old man with an IQ of 68. He is trying to go through a surgery to become smarter because he wants to learn. He is currently attending Miss Kinnian's class at the adult center.
- Climax
- Charlie goes to work as a janitor at a boxing company. His coworker/friends make fun of him and bully him. "You did a Charlie Gordan."
- Falling Action
- He is told that he may be chosen to go through with the surgery. But first he has to go through a series of tests. He also meets Algernon a white mouse that has gone through the surgery and a genius.
- Resolution
- Charlie is chosen and proceeds with the surgery. Charlie goes through with the surgery and it is successful.
- Algernon dies. Charlie takes Algernon and buries him. He visits him whenever he can to give him flowers.
- He goes back to Miss Kinnian's class at the adult center one last time. Charlie says goodbye to Miss Kinnian and the class before taking off. Miss Kinnian is left in tears. Charlie leaves the city and moves away for good. He moved away from all the people of his past.
