- HeLa cells along with others are cells that have have helped cure some issues.
- What are HeLa cells?
- Yea, what are they?
- HeLa cells are the first human cell line that could grow and divide endlessly in a laboratory, that lead scientists to label these cells “immortal”.
- The cell was discover from a woman named Henrietta Lacks (the person who the cell is named after). She was seeking treatment for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. But sadly didn't survive, but during her treatment, her cells were taken from her tumor, without her knowing.
- An advantage that this cell had was that instrumental in gene mapping and studying human diseases, especially cancer. And was also used to create a vaccine against polio.
- But a disadvantage of this cell is that it can can cause problems like how aggressively they can contaminate other cell cultures
