Last week my students were working in groups on a project and I had a situation with two students. Eva was working with Sam, and he was not doing his part.
Let us sit and talk this through.
Why bother when my ideas don't count. She is so focused on the guidelines.
Sam is refusing to adhere to the guidelines of the project. I told him to re-do it correctly. Now he is mad and refusing to help.
Exactly. And you did well by having a conversation with both students. It brought them to an understanding, as well as to respect each others ideas.
Sam fits the description of the creative underachiever. He does not like restrictions to his creativity. He has something unique to add to the project, but Eva has rejected it.
Eva is a perfectionist, while Sam is does not like limits to be placed on what he can do. I try to provide an environment where all my students can thrive regardless of their differences.
Wow, that was handled well. Eva was encouraged to take a risk with Sam's idea and Sam to add his unique touch. It pays to have some flexibility in the classroom.
Eva, let Sam add his unique style to the project. Remember, those are guidelines for your final project. Sam be mindful of Eva's ideas as well.
Thank you for listening, and helping us figure this out.
