As Zelda and Felix were in the cellar, Felix was telling Zelda that her parents were dead and he says, "I tell Zelda the story of what I saw. She doesn't believe me. 'No,' she yells, throwing herself on the sack" (Gleitzman 118-119)

When Felix stumbles into a deserted apartment with Barney, he states, "Then I realize there's someone else in the room. Oh. It's a little kid, about two, in a high chair. I can't tell if it's a girl or boy because there's too much blood on the little body. Oh. I scream for Barney" (Gleitzman 128)
When Felix looked at Zelda's broken locket, he stated, "I rub some Nazi finger grease off the photo and see Zelda's father more clearly and the clothes he's wearing and I almost stop breathing even though I'm still desperate for air. Zelda's father is wearing a uniform. A Nazi uniform" (Gleitzman 141).
After Felix and Zelda jump off the train, Felix states, "Once I lay in a field somewhere in Poland, not sure if I was alive or dead" (Gleitzman 162)
When Felix found out Zelda was going to die if he didn't get her aspirin, he stated, "I know what Barney was going to say before Zelda opened her eyes. If we can't get her temperature down in the next few hours, she'll die. I must find her some aspirin" (Gleitzman 135).
