The year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They were not just equal before God and the law. They were equal in every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was quicker than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or better looking than anybody else. And it was all due to the 212th, 213rd and 214th Amendments of the Constitution and the unceasing vigliance of the Handicapper Generals.

Some things about living were still not quite right though, for instance, it was April for not being springtime. And it was in that clammy month when the HG men took Hazel and George Bergeron's fourteen year old son, Harrison away.

It was tragic, all right, but George and Hazel didn't think about it quite though. Hazel had a perfectly average intelligence, that means she couldn't think about anything except in short bursts. And George, while his intelligence was way above normal, had a little mental handicap radio in his ear, which was connected to a transmitter, and he was required by law to wear it at all times. Every twenty seconds or so, the radio would send some sharp noise in his ear to keep people like him from taking unfair advantage of their brains.
