  • Exposition
  • "Who is the girl walking into the garden? She is gorgeous! "
  • "Professor Baglioni, do you know about Mr.Rappaccini who lives on the other side of the street? I think I have a crash on his daughter."
  • Conflict
  • "Don't ever get close to them. Rappaccini is crazy and inhuman, and only thing he does is to generate increasingly perilous poisons from his plants. He even contaminated his own daughter with the plants."
  • Rising Action
  • "Hi, nice to meet you! I am Giovanni, and I come from the South. I bought a bouquet of flowers for you. You are so beautiful!"
  • "Thank you so much! It's nice to see you! My name is Beatrice. It has been a while since last visitor came into the garden."
  • Giovanni, who is a boy from southern Italy, comes to northern Italy for the first time. He lives in his landlady Lisabetta's house. As he looks through the window, he sees a garden with beautiful flowers, and Lisabett tells him that the garden belongs to a scientist called Rappaccini. Giovanni also sees Beatrice, who is Rappaccini's daughter, and he falls in love with Beatrice.
  • Climax
  • “Beatrice, I want to ask you a serious question. Are your father and you trying to make me fall into a trap and become a guinea pig for your dad’s flowers?”
  • "What? What are you even talking about? I don't know anything about my dad's motive."
  • Giovanni introduces himself to professor Baglioni, who is a friend of his family. Baglioni admonishes Giovanni to stay away from Rappaccini because he is an inhuman and dangerous man, whose only intention is to create increasingly poisonous flowers. Baglioni's words totally make Giovanni feel contradictory because he really likes Rappaccini's daughter, Beatrice.
  • Resolution
  • "You are so weak! I can do whatever I want because you are my daughter!"
  • Despite Baglioni’s warning, Giovanni is in love withBeatrice, and he buys a bouquet of flowers for Beatrice. When they firstly seeeach other, Beatrice feels ecstatic to see Giovanni because it has been a longtime since last visitor came into the garden, and Beatrice feels joyful tosocialize with others.
  • Theme
  • "I hope I can become a bird one day, so I can gain freedom, make friends, and pursue what I truly love."
  • After Giovanni gets an antidote from Baglioni, he comes tothe garden. He firstly questions Beatrice for his father’s and her motive, butBeatrice says that she is completely innocent and does not know anything abouthis dad’s motive.
  • In order to prove her innocence, Beatrice drinks theantidote in the silver phial. Meanwhile, Rappaccini comes into the scene, and Beatrice starts dying. She asks her father restricts her freedom and controlsher life; however, her father berates her.
  • "Dad, why can't you just give the freedom that every child should have?"
  • One of the themes of “Rappaccini’s Daughter” is the desireof freedom. Beatrice, who is an innocent and kind-hearted girl, has no chanceto socialize with anyone from the outside world because she gets contaminatedfrom her dad’s flowers, and her dad Rappaccini restricts her from going out. Asa result, Beatrice possesses a strong desire for freedom and interacting withother people.

  • "Oh, it belongs to Mr.Rappaccini, who is a scientist."
  • Giovanni is the round character, who is innocent and emotional. Beatrice is the protagonist, who is innocent and kind-hearted and possesses a strong desire of freedom. Rappaccini, who is Beatrice's father, is the antagonist, who is inhuman and vicious person. Baglioni is a flat character, who only exhibits one characteristic.
  • Rappaccini meets Baglioni
  • This is the first time that Giovanni comes to northern Italy, and his whole family lives in the southern part. Lisabetta, who is his landlady, welcomes him to her house and tell him to feel the northern sun.
  • Giovanni thinks about Beatrice
  • After Giovanni sees through the window, he sees a garden that has a large number of beautiful flowers. Lisabetta tells him that the garden belongs to scientist named Rappaccini. Giovanni also sees a gorgeous girl, whose name is Beatrice, and she is Rappaccini's daughter.
  • Offering Antidote
  • "This antidote can extricate Beatrice from the poisons. Be cautious, they might trick you to become their guinea pig."
  • After Baglioni meets with Giovanni and talks with him, Rappaccini, who is Baglioni's rival, walks past them, and he looks upon Giovanni with interest, greeting Baglioni with contempt.
  • "How's going stupid man?"
  • Giovanni truly falls in love with Beatrice, and he can not stop thinking about her.
  • "What is Beatrice doing right now?"
  • When Baglioni comes to visit Giovanni, he brings him a silver phial of antidote, which can cure the poisons in Beatrice's body.
  • "Thank you so much! I will let her drink it, so she can be free."
