- The soldiers arrive at Leonato's house. Beatrice and Benedick have an argument and call each other things like a rare parrot teacher and a beast.
- One of the soldiers, Claudio, falls in love with Leonato's daughter, Hero. But, Don Pedro's evil half-brother, Don John, plots to make Claudio believe Hero is unfaithful and to make them fall apart.
- Meanwhile, Don Pedro and the others come up with a plan to bring Benedick and Beatrice together. Don Pedro, Claudio and Leonato get Benedick to overhear them saying that Beatrice loves him and Hero and her maid Margaret get Beatrice to overhear them saying the same thing about Benedick.
- Claudio thinks he sees Hero with Borrachio (Don John, the evil brother's servant) but in reality it is Borrachio tricking him and it is actually Margaret, Hero's own maid! So, at Claudio and Hero's wedding, Claudio says he will not marry Hero and says she is unfaithful!
- Leonato agrees to the Friar's plan to pretend Hero died of shock and then find out what really happened. Claudio is very upset and feels very guilty.
- Eventually the characters realise what has really happened and Dogberry the policeman arrests Borrachio and Don John. Hero is revealed as being alive and Claudio marries her. Then, Beatrice and Benedick announce their love for each other and plan to get married too.
