Into the WoodsBy Mrs. Norris
"It was a dark and stormy night?" Nope! Our story begins at a campsite. Three friends have hiked into the woods and are now resting around the campfire after a long day of hiking, fishing, and making camp. The fire is crackling, crickets are chirping...
So...what do these characters talk about around the campfire? Should someone tell a scary story? Are they recalling the events of the day and laughing together?
Oh, no! Someone is upset! Look at the characters' expressions. What would you say if you were upset or angry? What happened to cause this argument?
Wow! I've had so much fun today with you! I haven't been camping before.
I'm really tired. I feel like I've done all of the work and you guys just played.
We caught fish for dinner. I didn't even know that you could do that, Sam!
Me, too! I was so excited to see the waterfall and river. So beautiful!
Yup! Been fishing my whole life! My dad taught me. We come to these woods every summer.
What?!
Huh? You're not serious.
Cleaned the fish...washed the dishes...
Oh yeah. Who packed all of the gear? Who set up the fire? Who guided us thru the woods? That's right...ME!
Wait. Guys...please don't argue. Guys...guys...
This was YOUR idea! YOU wanted to go camping.
ADAM! You wouldn't let us help. We tried!
How could we improve the dialogue in this scene? We have an illustration, so we know what the characters look like? How do they speak? What do they say?
What happens next? How does Sara help her friends, Adam and Sam, with this argument? What is the solution?
