Peris first worked her way onto the international scene as a member of the Australian 4x100m team at the 1997 world championships. A year later, she was crowned Commonwealth champion in the 200m and was also a part of the 4x100m relay team that won gold. Furthering her distance a couple of years later, Nova was selected for the Sydney Olympics team in the 400m and 4x400m relay team, which placed fifth/Nova peris became the first indigenous Australian to win an Olympicgold medal in 4 x 400m relay.

Nova expresses her concern about the inequality between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australia and her optimism about the future of Aboriginal people.She was a senator for the northern territory (2013-2016). She became a National Treaty Facilitator for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission and led initiatives to improve girls’ education. Selected by Prime Minister Julia Gillard to stand as the Labor Party’s lead Senate candidate for the NT in 2013, Peris’s victory saw her become the first Indigenous woman elected to federal Parliament, highlighting alcohol abuse, the effects of climate change, and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Peris retired prior to the 2016 election.
