  • Why is the word slavery not even being mentioned?
  • It....does. It says here on page 7 that the Constitution is a set of rules used to keep our country united.
  • Does that book say anything about something called, The Constitution?
  • Charlie, you're in 5th grade right? Well, in 5th grade have they taught you about the Bill of Rights yet?
  • Um no, they haven't yet. But, I think I am in 7th grade. But, this book says that the Bill of Rights are a set of amendments stating what the government cannot do. For example it lists how the American people have rights that cannot be enforced and issued under the government and the Constitution, because they also have basic rights as a human being. Also, the more rights the people have, the less power goes to a tyrant. What's a tyrant?
  • A democracy is a form of government where no one person holds all of the power. The power is distributed among many people.
  • A tyrant, or a tyrannical government is one of which means one person controls the country, or place. That is why Bubbie, Mom, Dad and I prefer democracy.
  • What's a democracy?
  • Emily was eager to learn about the Constitution and everything inside of it. Although, even though she is only 8 she knew what slavery was. She knew that the Constitution was written by our founding fathers and more than half of them liked slavery. So, she thought, why is the word slavery never mentioned here?
  • Also, when there would be disputes among the National Government and the states do you know what they did? At first, there was no national court system to help solve these problems. The British wanted an effective government. So, they created the President, Congress, and a National Court system. So if there was a fight between the states and the National Government, the national court system, or the Supreme Court will decide this disputes. This was to protect the rise of a tyrannical government, where either the National Government or the States were fully in charge and had too much power.
  • Meanwhile, Pop-Pop Ned gave Charlie a book about something called the Bill Of Rights.
  • Oh! Sorry I didn't mention that, kiddo. The House of Representatives is a group of representatives from each state. And depending on how big or small a state is, affects how many representatives are representing their state in the house.
  • What's the House of. Representatives?
  • Pop-Pop Ned tried to explain to Charlie why a tyrannical government is very bad. No one person should hold all of the power. The power should be distributed throughout many people in that country or place.
  • Hey Bubbie...why isn't the word slavery being mentioned in the Constitution?
  • Well, sweet girl, the people who wrote the Constitution, or our "Founding Fathers" If you must, were pro-slavery. Well at least more than half of them were. And they knew deep down that if they mentioned slavery then their careers could be in jeopardy because they were saying these bad things about slaves.
  • Pop-Pop Ned explained to Charlie what happened if there was a fight between the National government and the states. Charlie mostly understood what his Pop-Pop was saying but he got a bit confused.
  • Charlie didn't know what that was, so Pop-Pop Ned explained it to him.
  • On the porch, Emily asked Bubbie Shira-Rose her lingering question. Why was slavery never mentioned in the Constitution? Bubbie Shira-Rose explained to Emily, and Emily thought that it wasn't right.
