  • Wow, that sounds like kids would be using all the skills and strategies needed for deeper comprehension! And I bet it fits well with CCSS!
  • Sigh, I sure wish I could find a new, and exciting way of engaging my students with their reading.
  • Have you considered using audio books or storytelling technology? I wish we did that in our class!
  • Could that really work?
  • Quick Write: Have you used audiobooks or storytelling technology in your classroom? What could be some benefits? Drawbacks?
  • It seems to me that using audiobooks could help students with all sorts of skills, phonemic awareness, prosody, visualizing, and just plain old loving stories! If you had kids discuss the audiobook or journal about it, you could support speaking and writing skills as well!
  • Using more technology is a great idea! When students use digital media, they are more engaged and supportive of each other! (Hett, p. 5)
  • In fact, using technology helps kids to become part of a larger community, respond and interpret ideas from a global perspective, produce visual images, and even evaluate and synthesize information! (Hess p. 5)
  • Audio books are a great way to differentiate! Students who need additional support in decoding, vocabulary, or more modeling of fluent reading really benefit! It really gives struggling readers a way to read for pleasure!! (Hess p.6)
  • Kids who get nervous about reading aloud can listen to a section prior to reading it to the class. Or, my advanced readers can listen to the book and journal about their listening experiences as an extension activity! (Hess, p.6)
  • Wow, I bet visual storytelling is FANTASTIC for helping kids get better at visualizing while they read! And imagine what the audio component could do for kids who need to develop their oral language skills?! And combining this with research? Kids would have to take new information and summarize it in a peer friendly way!
  • Digital storytelling is the best! Kids can use still or moving pictures, music or even voice recording to tell their story! Kids can research topics or share a creative story. It's great for developing reading and writing skills. (Hess, P.8)
  • I think the best part about digital storytelling is the motivation factor. Kid's know that they are writing for an audience of their peers and other viewers, so they are super motivated to make their stories awesome! They also tend to pay much closer attention to small details. (Hess, p. 9)
  • At first I thought that audiobooks or digital storytelling are just fluff to add some sparkle to class. But really, using these technologies will help kids develop the skills needed to become strong readers in our ever changing literacy landscape!
  • It's great for differentiation too! Struggling writers have the ability to enhance their writing with audio and images, so their work feels more meaningful to them. (Hess, p.9)
  • I use visual storytelling to have students introduce themselves at the beginning of the year. It's also good for introducing a new topic, that way I can skip a lecture! It's always a good idea to have parent volunteers or other helpers with you the first time you have kids make their own story though. (Hess, p.10)
