Oskar Schindler
Oskar Schindler was born on April 28, 1908 in what is now known as the Czech Republic. After high school in 1924, he had odd jobs and sold farm machinery. He married Emilie in 1928 at age 20.
Schindler joined a pro-Nazi party in 1935 and became a spy for the German military. He joined the Nazi party in 1939. He opened a factory in Krakow, Poland, where about half of his workers were Jewish. During World War II, Schindler hired more and more Jewish workers to protect them from the concentration camps and death. He bribed and paid millions of dollars to Nazi and German officials to save the lives of his Jewish workers. He eventually went bankrupt.
Oskar Schindler created many lists that included the names of over 1,000 Jewish workers. He claimed that his Jewish workers were essential to his factory, which produced vital goods for the Nazis. When the war ended, Schindler and his wife fled, for if they stayed, they would have been persecuted. When he died on October 9, 1974, he was buried in Jerusalem and was declared a Righteous Gentile for his efforts to save about 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust. In 1993, Steven Spielberg made the movie Schindler's List, which instantly became one of the most important movies to date.
