  • Good afternoon.
  • Come! Dine with us tomorrow.
  • If they'd rather die, they'd better do it, and decrease the surplus population!
  • Raising funds for the poor is hard work!
  • Scrooge is a 'tight-fisted hand at the grindstone'. He is as 'solitary as an oyster' and the cold within him freezes his old features. He edges his way along the crowded paths of life.
  • Speak comfort to me!
  • You may be an undigested bit of beef!
  • I wear the chain I forged in life!
  • Scrooge's nephew arrives - he is innocent and angelic. He invites Scrooge to Christmas dinner at his house. Scrooge refuses and sends him away.
  • Are you the spirit whose coming was foretold to me?
  • I am the Ghost of Christmas Past.
  • Two men from a charity visit Scrooge and ask him for a donation to the poor so they can have some meat, drink and means of warmth over Christmas. Scrooge refuses, and shares his views on the poor.
  • Poor boy!
  • That boy singing the Christmas Carol...
  • When Scrooge returns home, he sees Marley's head on his door-knocker. When he goes to bed, Marley's ghost appears and warns him about his sins and that he needs to change if he wants to go to Heaven when he passes. He shows him the chains he wears.
  • Scrooge is told he will be visited by three spirits. The first spirit appears - it is "a strange figure - like a child". It holds a branch of holly in its hand. It is the Ghost of Christmas Past.
  • The ghost takes him to his old school where he sees his younger self and feels pity. He shows the first real sign of change - he regrets not giving a boy singing a Christmas Carol something earlier on.
