- Douglass is worked very hard by Covey and is beaten often.
- Climax
- “What choice have I had- I’m supposed to break you remember!”
- Douglass was working too hard and in the end, collapsed while on the job. Covey kicked him and forced him to stand.
- Resolution
- “I cannot allow this”
- “Never again shall you break me”
- Douglass was helped by another slave who told him to carry a root in his right pocket that it would protect him from being whipped by white men.
- “Thank you but I fear I do not understand”
- “Keep it with you it will protect you as it has me”
- “You will in due time”
- After Douglass returns, Covey tackles him in the loft and Douglass fights back.
- “How dare you! You did this to me”
- Douglass won the fight and Covey never tried to hurt Douglass again.
