- Surprise, Mrs. Hutchinson being chosen
- People gather around in the square on the morning of June 27th. The grass is green, with blossoming flowers. It was around 300 people because it is a small town. The children assembled first. The drawing will start soon. "The people of the village began to gather in the square".
- Fear, Getting Stoned
- Mr. Summers arrives and is about to host the drawing. Mr. Summers is thoroughly stirring the papers. The black box next to him is the black box people draw papers from to see if they are selected or not. As the drawing starts people are called and select the papers from the black box. "Now, I'll read the names-heads of families first and the men come up and take a paper out the box"
- After many names get called up the drawing is over. Everyone is confused and does not know who was drawn. Mrs. Hutchinson asks for a redraw. They figure it out though, and they figure out that it was Mrs. Hutchinson, or "Tessie" was the one that got chosen from the black box. "It's Tessie," Mr. Summers said, and his voice was hushed."
- Mrs. Hutchinson is screaming because she is getting stoned. She was picked from the box to be the one getting stoned. She yells out that "It isn't fair, it isn't right," as a stone hit the side of her head. Soon they were upon her. The children even had stones themselves ready to hit her.
