Batya's Choice

- Batya was helping her Mommy clean up the supper table when she asked, “Mommy, can we please go to the candy store tomorrow? I want to use my Chanukah gelt!”
- Mommy responded, “Sure we can go! Which candy will you choose?” “Oh, I’m going to get lollipops, twizzlers, jolly ranchers, chocolate, winkies…” Batya went on and on.

- Mommy looked at Batya and said, “We can buy a yummy candy, but we’re not going to spend all of our money, okay?” Seeing Batya’s sad face, Mommy told her, “Come to the couch, I want to tell you a story...."
- "So you see, Batya, that sometimes it’s worth saving things up so you have even better at the end. About the candy, how about we spend a few dollars on it, but we'll save the rest for a different time, when you want something bigger and more important than candy that you eat at once?" Mommy asked.
- Once there was a lady named Mumeh Sara. Mumeh Sara had to go to jail, just because she was a Yid. Along with her, her son Moshe was also in jail.

- “Like the birthday present that I want to get for my friend Rivky!” Batya exclaimed.
- A few months before Pesach, Mumeh Sara thought to herself, My Son Moshe is not going to eat the food here on Pesach. He will only eat sugar, because it's Chametz.
- “Exactly,” Mommy smiled “I’m so glad you understand how important it is to think about the future.”
- So, even though in jail they got very little food, and the sugar gave her energy, Mumeh sara started collecting the little bits of sugar she got every day so Moshe wouldn't go hungry.
- When Pesach finally came, her son had what to eat, all because his mother had thought ahead of time."
