- Good Morning Dhave. My daughter Sophia has a summer project on agriculture and farming. Could you please introduce us to this topic and its basics?
- Sure. Agriculture is mainly of two types- Subsistence and Commercial Agriculture. Subsistence Agriculture is practised for the domestic consumption of farmers, whereas Commercial Agriculture is done with the aim of selling the product and earning profit.
- Seems interesting. Could you please explain in detail?
- Careful, do not step on those crops. Yes, so I was telling that this is Intensive Subsistence Agriculture. It is practised in densely populated regions, the land holdings are small and farming is intensive. Human labour is more utilized than machinery. We make optimum utilization of land and grow 2-3 crops annually with the help of irrigation and fertilizers. Major crops grown are rice, wheat, oilseeds, etc.
- And this is Plantation Agriculture, which comes under Commercial Agriculture. It is mostly practised in tropical and sub-tropical regions. It includes specialisation of a single crop, the farms are huge and are called estates. Machinery and fertilizers are used whenever required, manual labour is also required though. The crop is processed before being sent to markets for sale. The entire system is scientifically managed like a factory.
- This is where Orchard farming is done, also under Commercial Agriculture. It was developed in the Mediterranean region. They specialise in production of olives, figs, oranges and apricots. Viticulture or grape cultivation is also a speciality of that region as grapes are used for the production of wine.
